If a friend requested that you do emcee work for his or her wedding reception - try not to panic and instinctingly say “NO”. It is actually simple. All you need to do is to pretty much tell the guests what’s going on in the party.
Last week, Rico and I hosted another wedding reception party for Ivy and Anthony. Here are several details we learned to be important and should be prepared for:
1. Consult the couple their preferred flow of programme. It is their party so try to carryout whatever and however it is they want.
2. Give special attention to the couple every single time. You can do this by constantly directing guests’ attention to the couple and encouraging guests to tap their glasses to signal the couple to kiss.
3. Prepare a script out of the flow of the programme. The script doesn’t have to be wordy but should be organized and well written.
4. Know the couple and how they came to be. It is always nice to share with guests some sort of audio visual presentation or at least a narrative about the couple.
5. Know the couple’s family and friends. Be sensitive to their likes and dislikes so as not to offend anyone during the event.
6. Print several copies of the reception script for the wedding planner, the couple, the band, and for yourself. Include on the copies cues for music, lighting, etc.
7. Practice reading the script and try to sound conversational. Make sure that your voice is well modulated, firm but not offensive.
8. Make changes right before or even during the wedding reception, when needed.
9. Speak clearly and confidently.
10. Prepare a back-up CD or iPod of instrumental and non-instrumental songs, garters, bouquet, and other props that you’d possibly use during the programme.
11. Communicate with the performers, musicians, speakers, coordinators, etc.
