My 5 year old already knows how to read. Yes her Kumon sessions and worksheets did help her, but what helped her most is her willingness to learn how to read. Her desire for reading literature didn’t start from school. READING BEGINS AT HOME! That is why it is important to make your home a place for readers. Let me share with you some tips I got from friends and family on how to promote literacy at home.

  • Let your children know and feel that reading is important not just to them but also to you.
  • Choose a quiet time for reading to your child. It could be before nap time, bedtime, etc.
  • Choose a special place for reading. We usually read on the couch or on the bed.
  • Let your child choose a book for you to read out loud.
  • Hold the book in a way that he or she can see the pictures.
  • Let your child turn the pages.
  • Take time to look and talk about the pictures.
  • Don’t just read the story but also let your child point out the letters, shapes, colors, animals, characters, etc.
  • Invite your child to read to you or let her interpret his or her own story using the pictures and his or her imagination.
  • Let them help you make lists for grocery shopping, birthday planning, things to buy, things to do, etc.
  • Read aloud to your children everyday.

aww… your kid is very lucky to have a parent. i hope my mom had read to me when i was young. reading is some stranger’s hobby in our house. that is why i don’t read books at all, if i had, only textbooks or else i won’t catch up with school. now, im trying to really read, and i am hoping to develop that habit.

Hi! I have a 2yr++ son diagnosed with “COMBINED DEVELOPMENT DISORDER with Autistic Traits, Speech Development Delay & Signs of Attention Deficit Hyperkinetic Syndrome- (STRABISMUS CONVERGENS)” by a German NeuroPedia here in Dubai. He was suggested us for Behavioral Therapy for 3-6 months by discussing to a certain Occupational Therapist to help me for further exercises need to be applied unto the child, but unfortunately I haven’t find anyone yet…In addition to that RISPERDAL (Risperidone) might be considered in a long run which still haven’t given as yet too. Thus, I resigned from my work to take this seriously. Infact, i let him enrolled into playschool only for few weeks, but it seems he is not well interested. At home, I just let him watch some educational DVD such as ABC, Numbers, colors, Shapes, animals, fruit & veg. But to tell you frankly, he was very smart enough to learn all this things.. He even pronouced by reading the letters very well, he only cannot utter letter “C”,”S”,”X”,”Z”, for him if you let him read letter “C” he will reply only by saying “Cat”. Furthermore, he can say now some action words correspondingly like, “Eat”,”Drink”,”bathe”, “Clean”, “Drive” etc. But NO verbal communication as yet like for example he want water to drinks, he will let you bring to the kitchen to take his water once he can’t able to reach it, otherwise he did it by his own.
My question, does he require futher assesment or he will be directly do the therapy?? considering that, we will be having only 30days vacation to Phils,(20 Sept-15Oct ‘09) Does it suffice this time duration if ever therapy will be introduce to him. Understand if the time is not sufficient, but can you advise us what need to be done for the arrangement or adjustment on the limited period covering the assessment (if req’d) & the therary which will be possible to be given. Thanks for taking time on this regards..Hope you can revert us with your good suggestions. God Bless..

Like yours, my daughter’s five years and can already read. But she didn’t take Kumon or Enopi etc. That’s why I totally agree with you that Reading begins at Home. It’s all about exposure and of course, the parents’ willingness to help her child love the activity.

I love reading books.
