I have been training contact center applicants on the night shift for quite a while now. Every now and then I catch trainees sleeping, especially between the wee hours of 2 to 5 in the morning. Most of those whom I caught gave quite valid excuses… either they are not feeling well, they didn’t get enough sleep, they were bored, etc. Instead of filing incident reports against them I gave them a warning and tips on what to do to keep themselves awake during class. Here are just some of the most effective tips I gave them:
Eat. When you eat, you digest. Digestion uses up a lot of energy, so if you do not want to lose a lot of your energy, eat smaller meals every other hour. Just remember to choose what you eat as food with high fat content will only take longer to digest.
Drink coffee. This is a no-brainer, caffaine helps you stay awake.
Drink Water. When you do not have a take in enough liquid to rehydrate your body, you’d get dehydration which causes fatigue.
Cold shower or wash. A cold shower or a simple washing of face will perk you up and boost your energy.
Breathe deep. Deep breathing exercises increase oxygen levels in the blood. When you have enough oxygen in your bloodstreams you’d feel more relaxed. Slowly inhale and fill your lungs with air, hold your breath for a few seconds, and again slowly exhale and blow out the air off your lungs.
Apply acupressure. Putting pressure on some points of our body such as the top of the head, the sides of the top of the neck, the back of the hands, the flesh between the thumb and the forefinger, the point four fingers below the knees, and the bottom of the feet in the center below the balls are known to give the energy boost we need. Also try applying pressure to the ceiling of the mouth with the tongue, and pulling down and rubbing the earlobes are also known to energize.
