I do not know a developmental pediatrician based in San Fernando. The closest would be DR. MARIE ARRANZ-LIM of the Angeles University Foundation in Angeles City, Pampanga. UAF Tel. no. (63-45) 625-2888.

may i ask what attention deficit disease is?

    Thanks

  5. joan wrote on 16. Nov 2008

    Hi SJ,

    Here is the…

    ——
    DSM-IV Criteria for ADHD

    I. Either A or B:

Six or more of the following symptoms of inattention have been present for at least 6 months to a point that is disruptive and inappropriate for developmental level:

    Inattention

Often does not give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities.

Often has trouble keeping attention on tasks or play activities.

Often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly.

Often does not follow instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace (not due to oppositional behavior or failure to understand instructions).

    Often has trouble organizing activities.

Often avoids, dislikes, or doesn’t want to do things that take a lot of mental effort for a long period of time (such as schoolwork or homework).

Often loses things needed for tasks and activities (e.g. toys, school assignments, pencils, books, or tools).

    Is often easily distracted.

Is often forgetful in daily activities.

Six or more of the following symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity have been present for at least 6 months to an extent that is disruptive and inappropriate for developmental level:

    Hyperactivity

Often fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat.

Often gets up from seat when remaining in seat is expected.

Often runs about or climbs when and where it is not appropriate (adolescents or adults may feel very restless).

Often has trouble playing or enjoying leisure activities quietly.

Is often “on the go” or often acts as if “driven by a motor”.

    Often talks excessively.

    Impulsivity

Often blurts out answers before questions have been finished.

Often has trouble waiting one’s turn.

Often interrupts or intrudes on others (e.g., butts into conversations or games).

Some symptoms that cause impairment were present before age 7 years.

Some impairment from the symptoms is present in two or more settings (e.g. at school/work and at home).

There must be clear evidence of significant impairment in social, school, or work functioning.

The symptoms do not happen only during the course of a Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Schizophrenia, or other Psychotic Disorder. The symptoms are not better accounted for by another mental disorder (e.g. Mood Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, Dissociative Disorder, or a Personality Disorder).

Based on these criteria, three types of ADHD are identified:

ADHD, Combined Type: if both criteria 1A and 1B are met for the past 6 months

ADHD, Predominantly Inattentive Type: if criterion 1A is met but criterion 1B is not met for the past six months

ADHD, Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type: if Criterion 1B is met but Criterion 1A is not met for the past six months.

American Psychiatric Association: Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision. Washington, DC, American Psychiatric Association, 2000.

    I hope this helps.

    SJ,

In simpler terms Attention Deficit Disorder’s main features are: inattentiveness, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. The criteria for each of the main features are in the DSM-IV cited in my previous reply.

    Hello.

I would like to know where can I find a developmental pediatrician here in the Philippines who is already open on applying the research about treating Autism. I am a parent of a mild ASD,high functioning who has just been diagnosed. Although I have a fear that he has Autism years before, it took me long before I have him evaluated and before that, I’ve researched first that there is a treatment and that it has helped many. But,when I asked the doctor about it after the evaluation, she immediately said it’s not proven. I know it will not work on all, but I’m willing to have my son to be examined and undergo this research on IMMUNE SYSTEM&GUT INFLAMMATION/DISEASES relation to ASD-treating first before subjecting to gluten-free,casein-free diets, probiotics, multivitamins.

It has helped others; so,why can’t we stop try it aside from the conventional therapy? Other countries has already been doing this with good results, why can’t we?

I’m also an allied health professional and this research has give me hope which I do not have before having my son evaluated. If only I could order these lab exams/medications if needed before I do the diet, probiotics, multivits, I would.

Please help me find a doctor here because it needs medical supervision especially initially.

    Thank you very much.

    Hi Courtney Lee!

Finding a good developmental pediatrician who is willing and open to non-traditional treatment for Autism is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Here in the Philippines, we have quite a number of developmental pediatricians but a lot of them may solely rely on other doctors’ knowledge and may never read and update themselves of current literature. There may be some doctors who are outdated and even some may have inaccurate and misleading understanding on some treatments.

I understand how important it is to find a specialist that is willing to work with you. In your case, I recommend a doctor that networks with other doctors, who specializes on Autism, attends Autism conferences, reads up on research, and considers parental insights and suggestions.

Check out the developmental pediatricians who are affiliated with the Autism Society of the Philippines. Since they are affiliated, it would be safer to assume that they attend ASP’s seminars and workshops and are updated with new intervention methods and therapies. ASP has referral services. I am sure through them, you’ll be able to get good recommendations for professionals best suited for your situation.

Below are contact infos of ASP and a non-govermental organization for Individuals with Autism:

    Hi Joan,

In my earlier post, i said that my 11-year old son just got diagnosed with ADHD. I need a second opinion not because i doubt that there is something different about him but because he was outright given a medication just by us talking to the doctor. Us, meaning – just me and my mother inside the doctor’s clinic. My son’s not violent, just cant focus on most of the things assigned to him so i was surprised that he would need a medication.

Anyway, i chanced upon your website (with is very helpful by the way)and saw the list of devt pediatricians, you have a neuropsychologist, clinical psychologist, adult psychiatrist etc. I wonder which doctor should i got to?

    Please advise.

    thanks a lot!

    Hi Joan!

I’m a first time mom to a 4-months-3-week old baby boy. His current pedia referred him to an ophthalmologist when he was just 3 months due to brief eye contact/focus but the the ophthalmologist advised us that there is nothing wrong with his eyes, he reacts on light and track objects presented to him. At present, his pedia asked us to still observe him coz she suspect autism because he still have brief focus and tends to look up and sideways when talking to him but tends to coo and shout a lot. At his age he also cannot roll from his back to his front by himself and when placed on his stomach, he hardly lift his head and shoulders high. Should I take him to a developmental pedia? Can you referrer a good developmental pedia near Tondo, Manila area?

Many thanks to your website I’m learning a lot

  18. joan wrote on 31. Mar 2009

    Hi Lea,

I apologize for the late reply. Thank you though for sharing us your story. I learned from school that babies, who are not nearly toddlers, are kind of challenging to diagnose. Although you, as a mom, can tell if something is normal or not with your child, we cannot jump and conclude that he has Autism. I agree with what your pediatrician told you, observe your son. What I recommend is that you read about the different developmental stages and read on DSM’s definition and symptoms of Autism. Your observations should be based on guided literature and should also be documented. Your documentation of your child’s development will not help you understand what’s going on but also help your developmental pediatrician understand your son’s development and determine your son’s needs. The list I have on this page have contact infos of the developmental pediatricians I know. I will have to ask around and get back to you on referrals near Tondo, Manila. Hope to hear from you again. Take care.

    Hi, Joan.

My son was diagnosed with ADHD two years ago when he was 12 and the Developmental Pediatrician wanted to put him on medicines, which we declined.

Now that he is 14, we are bothered by his ADHD and would want to consult other doctors but the Developmental Pediatricians will no longer accept him as patient as he is “over-aged”.

Whom do we go to for young ADHD boys?

    Hi Joan,

Good day!I have a 7mos old baby girl and we just brought her to a pedia last Saturday. When she was 3 mos and 4 mos I already noticed that my daughter cannot contact/focus on me or she seems not seeing at all. Her pedia referred her to an opthal pedia however my daughter wasn’t evaluated yet because she’s in Bicol right now with our parents and the opthal pedia visits once a moth only. The second problem that we noticed was she looks like a 3-4 mos old baby not a 7mos old. She cannot control her head yet, she had difficulties in lifting her head. Her pedia told us to consult a developmental pedia, and the pedia told us that we only have a developmental pedia here in Manila.
May I ask if you have idea how much a consultation for a developmental pedia? I don’t want torisk her life…. I’m so worried about her…..
    Please enlighten me….

Hello, I have come across your website by accident because I was trying to trace Dr. Edilberto I. Dizon’s email address. I was a student of his in U.P. in the early 90s. I also worked with him after my studies because most of my students and clients were his clients as well. I hope you could help me, with his consent of course, to avail of his contact details for reference purposes. I am now based in England and I am currently looking for a job to carry on working with children with special needs i.e. autism and similar developmental disabilities.

Thank you and best wishes to you and your colleagues. If I can be of any help i.e. to liaise or echo some recent trends and information about autism from here,I can be reach through this email address. I am a previous member of National Autistic Society and I am hoping to revive my membership this year so I can update myself and be involved again.

Thank you for your reply on my queries posted last Feb. I followed your advise on observing further and recording my child’s developments and my son now is 9 months old.

When my son was almost 7 months we noticed that he seldom use/move his left arm and left foot, with this observation I asked his pedia if there’s any way possible for us to know what is really wrong with him because at 6 months he can only lift his head and flip, he still cant focus and no eye contact and the observed left body part’s weakness. The pedia suggested to see a neuropedia if this is still so when he reached 7 mos. Days before he’s 7 mos., I observed jerking, this happened for almost 4 minutes, 3 times a everyday, we then immediately consulted a nueropedia. The nueropedia confirmed that the jerking was a micromic seizure and requested for several lab and diagnostic tests which include Urine metabolic screening, EEG and MRI. The EEG says that he’s having epileptic discharges in both brains and the MRI result says that his right brain stopped from growing. These results shocked us but what was more shocking is the reason why this happened. According to the nueropedia my son was stroked out while inside my womb and this cannot be cured. We only have to do rehabilitation and maximize his brain to function. For now we have to wait for 5 months before he’ll be evaluated by a developmental pedia(thanks to your list) and therapist.

I read mommy SHEILA’s posting/query last June 1 and i see similar symptoms that of her daughter’s with my son. I suggest that she also see a neuropedia if her daugter is still having developmental delays.

Thank you very much for the help at least now i know my son’s condition and special need.

    Lea

My son 2 and 10 months old has a lot of extra extra energy. He loves to do the things that are tagged “NO” for him. For his age now he knows his alphabet well. Very well that he can identify and say each letter sound correctly. If you are wearing a T-shirt with a letter print on it my son is going to read it letter by letter. He can count 1-40, can identity numbers from 1-20, can recognize colors and shapes, and can sing nursery songs in correct tone with unclear lyrics .

I recalled that two pediatrician doctors advised me to have my son check with a pedia in childhood development. Maybe because my son is so restless that his pedia noticed that he can’t sit down when its time and proper for him just to sit down. Except only when his watching his DVD’s, there you’ll see his focus on those stuffs. He is also a Late Talker, seldom I heared him say mommy. Although now his practicing and beginning to composed phrases by himself.

I really felt my son needs a medication with his behavior and his EXTRA Energy really bothers me.
Can you please advise me. We’re presently in Surigao City and we’re planning to move and reside in Makati end of this year..

    Hello Joan,

I have a two year old daughter which barely speak…I can say that she is very active and understand the instructions well and she can follow. She don’t even address me as “mommy” or “mama” or should I say that she wasn’t call me into something but just babbles when she wants to call me. She can say her friends’ name, cat, ball, no, dede, ayaw, ate, daddy, she can even count 1-10 but 2,3,5,6,7,8 and 10 are just the clear words. She can also follow us when we sing ABC and can pronounce some of the letters well. I don’t know but me as a mom could evaluate that nothing is wrong with her since I know that children has different pace of developments. But, I am afraid as well that I might be too insensitive on her speech delays and she might have bigger problems in the future. I have a niece who is the same age with her but can talk too far from her. But my baby is so advance with her motor skills…She walks at the age of 10 months and she can even go up and down with the stairs. Should I worry?

    Hi to the moderator,

My son is 1yr and 10months old and will turn 2 this february. The odd thing my wife and I noticed about him is that he seems to be hyperactive. When he gets his feet on the floor, instead of walking he runs. I dont think I ever saw him walk normal. He just runs. I’ve been reading on some websites and articles about autism, and I can say my son doesn’t qualify as ADHD child. The only odd thing I saw with my child is that he likes to run rather than walk, and when he is kind of upset, like if you keep him from running or something he wants, he crys and slap us, well most of the time the nanny gets more of it. He had a case of coughing this past week and we brought him to a pedia for some treatment, I think my son was playing a bit before he was called in. He was a bit far from the que list so he tried to play with the kids and other stuff there at the clinic, so when it was his turn for checkup he was already engrosed in playing. At the doctors table he kind resisted being held down so he acted irritated. The lady doctor in that moment said he could possibly have autism and asked us to have our son checked. And from that time on me and my wife have been doing all this readign and research to get to know about autism. We are trying to get in touch with a specialist either in Olongapo or Pampanga. Worse case scenario, we might go as far as Manila to see specialists. Im not that paranoid yet, but it does kind of make you uneasy after hearing from a doctor that your child may have that case. We pray that he does not have a problem. I hope the people here can give me information of specialists they know near Olongapo or Pampanga. We would really appreciate it. I also pray to the others who are already are dealing with autism to have more blessings and recover from thier ordeals.

    Thank you.
