Cooking Basics: Measuring Ingredients
Posted by joan under Cooking
For first time cooks, it is important to be consistent in measuring the ingredients correctly to achieve successful results. First thing to do is to collect the right utensils for the job and learn the correct method for measuring specific ingredients.
The Utensils
Make sure that you have graduated measuring cups or the dry measuring cups. These cups have increments for 1/4, 1/3. 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, and 1 cup. These cups are never used for liquids. On the other hand, liquid measuring cups are clear glass or plastic cups that hold 1, 2, or 4 cups of liquid and have marking printed on the outside. These glass or plastic cups are designed with a spout for easy pouring. Lastly, it is also important to have measuring spoons that are commonly available in sets that measure 1/4, 1/2, 1 teaspoon, and 1 table spoon. These can be used for both dry and liquid ingredients.
The Right Way to Measure
For dry ingredients, spoon first the ingredient to the dry measuring cup or measuring spoon and level off the excess ingredient with a spatula or the edge of a knife. For liquid ingredients, place the liquid measuring cup on a flat surface, then bend down so that your eye is level with the markings that are written on the cup. When using a measuring spoon, fill the measuring spoon with the syrup or other liquid ingredients to the top without letting the liquid spill out.
