Beware Of Melamine
Posted by joan under Family, Food and Drinks, Health
I rarely read newspapers and has stopped watching news on T.V. I wasn’t aware of the Melamine poisoning in China until after a friend told me about it.
Melamine is an organic substance included in pesticides, and used to make counter tops, dry erase boards, glue, fabric, and many more. Melamine has been reported to be added to food products in order to increase the apparent protein content. This issue was brought up after cases of poisoning in China was reported. Melamine by itself is nontoxic in low doses, but when it is combined with another substance, cyanuric acid, it can cause the kidneys to fail due to kidney stones. Melamine is harmful whether swollowed, inhaled, or absorbed by the skin. Below is a list of milk and milk products where Melamine was detected as of October 23, 2008:
- Greenwood Yili Fresh Milk (in chinese character);
- JollyCow Slender High Calcium Low Fat Milk (more Calcium and vitamin D) 1 liter
- LOTTE B+W KOALA Biscuit
- LOTTE Chocolate Snack KOALA Biscuit
- Mengniu Drink (in Chinese Character)
Watch what you eat!
